SOROTI CITY - Police in Soroti City have launched investigations into a suspected mob justice incident that left two people dead and another seriously injured in the early hours of Monday.

The incident occurred at around 2:00 a.m. along Town Talks Street in Soroti Central Ward, Soroti East Division, according to a statement released by the Uganda Police Force.

Preliminary findings indicate that three street children were allegedly attacked by a mob on suspicion of theft. During the assault, two of the victims were reportedly beaten and set on fire, leading to their deaths. A third victim was rescued by responding police officers and rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Police said the bodies of the deceased have been taken to the city mortuary for postmortem examination as detectives continue investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.

The Uganda Police Force has condemned the act, describing mob justice as unlawful and unacceptable. Authorities emphasized that every suspect has a constitutional right to due process and should be handed over to the police for lawful investigation and prosecution.

Police have appealed to members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspected offenders through the appropriate legal channels.

Anyone with information that could assist the ongoing investigations has been urged to report to the nearest police station or contact Soroti Central Police Station as investigations into the incident are ongoing.
