SOROTI - UMCAT School of Journalism, Mass Communication and Business Studies, Soroti Campus is celebrating another milestone after its Guild President, Alfred Atwau, was elected Chairperson of the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) for the Teso Sub-region.
Atwau's election places him at the helm of student leadership across the sub-region, where he will serve as Chairperson of UNSA Teso and provide leadership to Guild Presidents and student leaders from universities and tertiary institutions across the region.
The victory has sparked jubilation among students and staff at UMCAT Soroti Campus, with students describing the election as a major achievement for the institution and its student leadership.
Atwau, who is currently serving as the Guild President of UMCAT Soroti Campus, has built his leadership profile through his involvement in student affairs and activities aimed at strengthening student representation and promoting unity within the institution.
Beyond student leadership, Atwau is also a familiar face in the media fraternity, having worked with Vision Group as a writer for New Vision and Etop Radio in Soroti. His experience in journalism has seen him report on a wide range of community and regional issues, giving him extensive interaction with communities, leaders and institutions across Teso and beyond.
His work in the media has also placed him at the centre of public discussions on issues affecting young people and communities, while his journalism background continues to shape his approach to communication, advocacy and leadership.
His election comes shortly after another achievement in which he was crowned Mr UMCAT Uganda 2026/2027 a title that represents students across the five UMCAT campuses, including Soroti, Mbale, Gulu, Arua and Kampala.
The double achievement has further raised Atwau's profile within the UMCAT community, with students at the Soroti Campus joining celebrations to mark what they describe as a proud moment for the institution.
“Today is not just about my personal achievement. It is a victory for UMCAT Soroti Campus and for every student who believed in our leadership. I am committed to using this position to strengthen the voice and unity of student leaders across Teso,” Atwau said.
Timothy Esiolo a diploma studentbof UMCAT while celebrating the victory said Atwau's election is source of pride for the institution, describing it as recognition of the leadership emerging from UMCAT Soroti Campus.
“We are proud to see our Guild President take on a regional responsibility. His election shows that the work he has done in student leadership is being recognised beyond UMCAT,” the student said.
As UNSA Teso Chairperson, Atwau is expected to coordinate and represent the interests of student leaders across the Teso Sub-region, bringing together Guild Presidents and other student representatives from institutions within the region.
His new responsibility also gives him a platform to promote dialogue among student leaders and strengthen cooperation on issues affecting students in higher institutions of learning.
The celebrations come at a time when Atwau is already serving his institution as Guild President, making his election to the regional position an additional responsibility in representing students beyond UMCAT Soroti Campus.
The UNSA Teso leadership brings together student leaders from institutions across the sub-region, making the position an important platform for coordination, representation and engagement on matters affecting students.
Atwau's election therefore marks another chapter in his student leadership journey, coming only days after his recognition as Mr UMCAT Uganda.
For UMCAT Soroti Campus, the two achievements have turned into a moment of celebration as students rally behind their Guild President and regional student leader.
