SOROTI – The Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), Hon. Jacqueline Amongin, has called upon women across the Teso sub-region to actively participate in the ongoing Women Council elections and vote for leaders who will champion community development and women's empowerment.

Speaking as the coordinator of the Women Council electoral process in Teso, Amongin urged all registered women to turn up in their respective villages and cells to exercise their democratic right by electing capable and committed leaders. She emphasized that the Women Council elections are important because the leaders elected will serve for a period of five years and will play a crucial role in advancing the interests of women and their communities.

Amongin noted that the electoral process officially commenced on July 23 at the village level, where women voters are expected to elect five leaders, namely the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, General Secretary, Treasurer, and Publicity Secretary. She explained that those elected at the village level will proceed to the parish-level elections, where they will participate in electing another set of representatives.

The electoral process will subsequently continue at the sub-county, district, and national levels, ensuring that women's voices are represented from the grassroots to the highest level of leadership. According to Amongin, this structured system provides women with an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national development through leadership and civic participation.

She encouraged women across Teso to vote for leaders who are committed to promoting community development initiatives, improving health and hygiene standards, and sensitizing communities on issues affecting women and children. She added that Women's Council leaders are instrumental in mobilizing communities and supporting government programs aimed at improving household welfare and livelihoods.

Amongin concluded by urging women throughout the sub-region to embrace the electoral process and elect visionary leaders who will effectively represent their interests and champion sustainable community development over the next five years.
