The President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, on Saturday hosted the Paramount Chief of the Iteso and Ateker people, His Highness Papa Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot Etomeileng, for high-level discussions aimed at strengthening development cooperation, cultural ties and economic opportunities for the Ateker communities across East Africa.
 

The meeting, held at State House, Nairobi, brought together two influential leaders whose engagement signals growing recognition of the importance of cultural institutions in promoting unity, peace, economic transformation and regional integration.

At the centre of the discussions was the development of the Ateker people, who live across national boundaries in Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan and other parts of the region. The leaders explored opportunities for strengthening cooperation and creating greater linkages among communities that share historical, cultural and traditional connections.

According to the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) Minister for Information, Stephen Ojacor, the meeting reflected President Ruto's commitment to supporting initiatives that promote the welfare and development of the Iteso people, including communities living in the eastern parts of Kenya.

Papa Emorimor was accompanied to the meeting by Her Majesty Toto Akaliait Juliet Among Atomeileng, alongside other senior leaders and officials of the Iteso Cultural Union.

The engagement provided an important platform for the leadership of ICU to present its vision for the development, unity and empowerment of the Iteso and wider Ateker communities.

President Ruto reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Kenya to work with cultural and community institutions in advancing development initiatives that can improve the livelihoods of the people.

“The meeting also explored opportunities in cross-border trade and regional economic cooperation as part of efforts to strengthen the Teso economy and create greater opportunities for our people,” Ojacor said.

The discussions on cross-border trade are expected to generate renewed attention towards the economic potential of the Ateker region, particularly through improved cooperation between communities and governments across national borders.

For years, the Ateker people have maintained strong cultural, historical and social ties despite being separated by modern national boundaries. Cultural leaders have increasingly emphasized the importance of transforming these shared connections into opportunities for peace, trade, tourism, investment and social development.

The meeting between President Ruto and Papa Emorimor therefore represents another important step towards placing the Ateker agenda on the regional and international development platform.

The engagement also gave further visibility to the Iteso Cultural Union, the institution responsible for preserving and promoting the cultural identity, unity and development aspirations of the Iteso people.

Under the leadership of Papa Emorimor, ICU has continued to champion cultural revival, youth empowerment, education, economic development, environmental conservation and stronger relationships among the Ateker communities.

One of the major outcomes of the meeting was President Ruto's commitment to support and attend the forthcoming 4th Coronation Anniversary of His Highness Papa Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot Etomeileng.

According to Ojacor, President Ruto confirmed his willingness to participate in the historic celebrations, which are expected to bring together cultural leaders, political leaders, government officials and members of the Ateker community from different parts of the region.

“President Ruto has confirmed his attendance at the 4th Coronation Anniversary. This has therefore made us postpone the Coronation Anniversary by one week to accommodate this important engagement,” Ojacor said.

Following the development, the Iteso Cultural Union has officially adjusted the dates of the celebrations.

The Coronation Anniversary, which had initially been scheduled for 22nd to 24th August 2026, has now been moved to 29th to 31st August 2026 in Kenya.

The celebrations are expected to become a major platform for showcasing the cultural strength, unity and development potential of the Iteso and the wider Ateker people.

As preparations intensify, the high-level meeting in Nairobi has sent a strong message that the Ateker agenda is increasingly gaining recognition at the highest levels of leadership in East Africa.

For ICU, the engagement marks another important opportunity to position the institution as a key driver of cultural diplomacy, regional unity and people-centred development.

The meeting between President Ruto and Papa Emorimor has therefore opened a new chapter of cooperation and visibility for the Iteso Cultural Union and the wider Ateker community, as leaders continue working towards a united, peaceful and economically empowered Ateker people.
