Former Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Rt. Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu, has reportedly been arrested by security forces in Soroti City, according to a statement issued by the military on Monday evening.

Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information and spokesperson for the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), announced the arrest in a post on X, describing Elwelu as a renegade UPDF officer.

According to Magezi, Elwelu had been on the run over alleged involvement in subversive activities and plans to destabilise the Teso sub-region.

Magezi further claimed that security forces had recently recovered 15 guns allegedly in Elwelu's possession, alongside military fatigues and two pickup trucks.

He said Elwelu would be charged and prosecuted in courts of law accordingly.

The reported arrest follows heightened public and political attention surrounding security concerns in Teso, with several leaders making statements about alleged threats to stability in the region.

However, details surrounding the circumstances of Elwelu's arrest, the alleged activities and the specific charges he may face have not yet been independently established.

Elwelu remains entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court of law.
