The Uganda Police Force in East Kyoga Region has arrested a 35-year-old man over allegations of impersonating a senior army officer, obtaining money through fraud, and possessing suspected government stores, including Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) uniforms.

The suspect, identified as Ochola Jonathan, also known as Ekotu Peter or Onoria, a resident of Majengo Cell, Oderai Majengo Ward, Soroti City West Division, was arrested by the Flying Squad team following a complaint from Katakwi District.

The arrest was confirmed by the Regional Police Commander (RPC) East Kyoga , Haji Ibrahim Saiga, who indicated that the suspect was being investigated over allegations of impersonation, theft and possession of suspected government property.

According to preliminary police information, the suspect allegedly impersonated Colonel Ekotu Peter, purportedly attached to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, and used the identity to deceive members of the public and obtain money fraudulently.

Police investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly obtained UGX 1.2 million from the father of an inmate on remand at Katakwi Prison in connection with a murder case. He reportedly claimed that he could facilitate the inmate's release on bail through the Soroti High Court.

However, the circumstances surrounding the alleged transaction are being investigated as police seek to establish the full extent of the suspect's activities and determine whether other members of the public may have fallen victim to similar schemes.

A search conducted at the suspect's residence reportedly led to the recovery of two pairs of UPDF uniforms, desert boots, a UPDF bag, a cap, Parish Development Model (PDM) documents bearing details of Abim District, names of inmates and other documents associated with the military.

Further preliminary information indicates that the suspect allegedly impersonated an officer attached to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and contacted other public officials, reportedly using threats and intimidation to solicit money from them. He is also alleged to have worn UPDF uniform on several occasions.

Police are continuing with investigations to establish the authenticity and intended use of the recovered items, as well as to determine whether the suspect acted alone or had accomplices.

The suspect is currently detained at Soroti City East Police Division pending further interrogation as investigations into the matter continue.

The Uganda Police Force has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of impersonation, fraud and extortion to the nearest police station.

Police have also cautioned the public against individuals who falsely claim to hold positions in government institutions or security agencies to solicit money, make threats or promise to influence official processes.

The case serves as a reminder to the public to verify the identities and official credentials of individuals claiming to represent government institutions, particularly when they demand money in exchange for services such as securing bail or influencing ongoing criminal proceedings.

The allegations against the suspect remain subject to police investigations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
