Former Soroti City Council Speaker Juliet Agonyo has earned recognition for her service as National Treasurer of the Uganda Urban Council Speakers Association, an achievement she says has helped raise the profile of Eastern Uganda on the national stage.

Agonyo, who served in the position from 2022 to 2026, received awards of excellence and appreciation in recognition of her service, commitment and contribution to the association, with the position remaining in Soroti City following the appointment of the current City Council Speaker, Faith Nagawaga, as her successor.

The development maintains Eastern Uganda's representation in the association's leadership, with Soroti City retaining the influential treasury position.

Speaking in an interview, Agonyo said she was humbled by the recognition, noting that she felt honoured to have been considered among the leaders whose contributions and commitment to service had been acknowledged.

She attributed her journey to national leadership to the confidence and support of the former Soroti City Council, which elected her Speaker, saying the opportunity enabled her to extend her leadership responsibilities beyond the city.

Agonyo thanked the former councillors for trusting her with the speakership, adding that without their support, she would not have had the opportunity to serve at the national level.

She also urged leaders in Soroti City and across the Teso sub-region to maintain good reputations, demonstrate commitment and uphold integrity in their respective leadership positions.

Agonyo said responsible leadership and hard work are essential in building public confidence and creating opportunities for communities to gain recognition at national level.
