KAMPALA — Ugandan singer John Blaq has explained why he avoids regularly going live on TikTok, saying he wants to maintain his identity as a musician rather than become known primarily as a social media content creator.
Speaking in an interview on Sanyuka TV, the singer, whose real name is Kasadha John, said he uses TikTok to promote his music and other projects but deliberately limits his activity on the platform.
“I wouldn’t want to go live because then that makes me a TikToker. As an artist, you have to create that demand, not being everywhere,” he said.
Blaq argued that musicians should be strategic about their public appearances and online presence instead of making themselves constantly available to their audiences.
He also suggested that media interviews should serve a clear purpose, such as promoting a new song or project, rather than being granted without a specific reason.
However, the singer clarified that his position was a personal choice and not a criticism of artists who regularly go live on TikTok to engage fans or earn money.
“In my point of view, that’s not how I make my own money,” he said.
TikTok has become an important platform for music promotion, audience engagement and income generation, with several Ugandan musicians using livestreams to interact directly with fans.
Blaq, who gained wider recognition around 2018 and 2019 with songs including Tukwatagane and Sweet Love, appears to favour a more selective approach to social media, keeping his online activity focused on promoting his work.
His remarks highlight differing strategies among musicians as they navigate the growing influence of social media on the music industry.
