One person has been confirmed dead following a fatal road accident involving a vehicle carrying Gen. Jeje Odongo Abubakar, the Member of Parliament for Orungo County, along the Soroti–Lira Highway in Soroti City.
The deceased, a schoolgirl whose identity had not been established by press time, was reportedly knocked down by the vehicle as Gen. Odongo travelled towards Orungo via Atirir on Saturday evening.
The accident occurred on Saturday at approximately 4:30pm at Amen A, near Arapai Ginnery.
According to eyewitnesses, Gen. Odongo was travelling in a convoy of vehicles departing Soroti City when the incident happened. They said the lead vehicle had already passed when the girl attempted to cross the highway and was struck by the vehicle carrying the legislator.
The driver reportedly swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the child, but the vehicle veered off the road and overturned.
Gen. Odongo, his driver and a bodyguard sustained injuries in the accident and were rushed to Doctors Plaza Hospital in Soroti City for first aid and medical attention.
Mr Pius Elubu, the legislator's political assistant, confirmed the incident, although the extent of the injuries sustained by the occupants had not been established by press time.
The accident attracted the attention of residents and motorists in the area, with eyewitnesses recounting the events leading to the vehicle overturning.
By press time, police had not issued an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the accident. The identity of the deceased schoolgirl and further information about the incident were also yet to be officially confirmed.
