Manhunt Launched After Nephew Murders 75-Year-Old Aunt Over Tamarind Seeds in Serere

SERERE - A 30-year-old man is on the run after allegedly murdering his 75-year-old aunt in a shocking dispute over tamarind seeds in Serere District. The incident, which has left the community reeling, occurred on the afternoon of September 19, 2024, in Ariet Village, Omagoro Parish, Kyere Sub-County.

 

The suspect, identified as Emitu Solomon, is accused of brutally attacking his elderly aunt, Atigo Melda, following an argument over tamarind seeds. Emitu reportedly went to collect tamarind, known locally as "apedur," from a tree on their ancestral land. When Melda attempted to stop him, a confrontation erupted.

 

In a fit of rage, Emitu returned to his home, armed himself with a panga, and proceeded to fatally strike his aunt on the neck.

 

The savage attack occurred in broad daylight, leaving neighbors in shock. Although they attempted to pursue Emitu as he fled the scene, their efforts were in vain. The suspect managed to escape and remains at large.

 

The incident was reported to the police by Okalebo Martin, the LC1 Chairperson of Ariet Village. The case was filed under CRB 478/2024 at Serere Central Police Station. Authorities swiftly responded to the scene, where they confirmed Melda’s death and launched a full investigation.

 

The deceased’s body was transported to Serere Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination, which is expected to provide further details on the cause of death.

 

No arrest had been made by press time and Emitu Solomon the suspect remains at large however Police in Serere have launched a manhunt for him, as we urge the public to come forward with any information that could lead to his arrest. 

 

"We strongly advise against all forms of violence. However,We would like to encourage anyone who feels threatened to seek help immediately either from the local authorities or particularly the police so that they can be resolved in a peaceful manner", the Acting Pro East Kyoga Asp Obukulem Edison said in a statement.

 

He further assured the family of the victim that they are committed to delivering justice for Atigo Melda as they work tirelessly to bring the suspect to account for his actions as they keep updating the public as investigation progresses.
