SOROTI - Teso, a region rich in culture and natural beauty, is set to be showcased in an upcoming tourism symposium organized by the Iteso Cultural Union. This exciting event, scheduled for July 19-20, aims to unveil the hidden treasures of Teso and attract stakeholders in the tourism industry to explore the vast potential of the region.
According to Joseph Ojaatum, the Iteso Deputy Minister for Tourism and Documentation, the symposium is designed to highlight the unique cultural heritage, natural attractions, historical sites, and potential game reserves that Teso has to offer.
"The Iteso Cultural Union hopes to attract tourists and investors to the region, thereby boosting the local economy and promoting sustainable development," Ojatum said.
Teso, located in eastern Uganda, is a region steeped in history and culture. It is home to the Iteso people, known for their warm hospitality and rich cultural traditions. The Iteso community is celebrated for its vibrant music, dance, crafts, and traditional cuisine, which are integral to their identity and way of life.
The region boasts stunning natural beauty, including diverse bird species, lush landscapes, and the sprawling Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve. Pian Upe is one of Uganda’s largest wildlife conservation areas, renowned for its unique flora and fauna, offering a haven for eco-tourists and wildlife enthusiasts.
In addition to its natural attractions, Teso is home to several historical sites that provide a glimpse into the region's past. These include ancient rock paintings and archaeological sites that tell the story of the Iteso people and their ancestors.
A notable nearby attraction is Tororo Rock, a prominent volcanic rock formation that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Climbing Tororo Rock is a popular activity for adventurers and nature lovers alike.

-Nyero Rock Paintings: Ancient rock art that provides insight into the early inhabitants of the region.
- Lake Bisina and Lake Opeta: Important birding sites and part of the Eastern Uganda wetland system.
- Soroti Rock: Another impressive rock formation offering panoramic views of Soroti town and the surrounding area etc.
Despite its vast potential, Teso remains one of the least explored regions in Uganda. The ICU hopes to change this narrative by promoting tourism in the area etc.
The two-day symposium will feature presentations, exhibitions, and cultural performances that showcase the best of Teso with a number of topics to be discussed.
The Iteso Cultural Union has invited stakeholders from the public and private sectors, including government officials, tourism operators, investors, and cultural experts. The event is expected to attract a large audience and generate interest in Teso as a tourist destination.
