Police in Nateete Division are holding a man accused of disguising himself as a woman in order to obtain employment as a domestic worker before allegedly stealing UGX 1.7 million from his employers.
The suspect, identified as Kayaga Rayan, also referred to as Rayan Kayaga, allegedly presented himself as Namirembe Rukia, a female domestic worker, and secured a job at a home in Mutundwe, Rubaga Division, Kampala.
Police say the alleged deception was uncovered after the suspect was subjected to a security check at a church entrance in Mutundwe, where questions arose about his identity. The employers later discovered that money had gone missing from their home and reported the matter to police.
According to preliminary police findings, the suspect had used women’s clothing, makeup and other forms of disguise to appear as a female while seeking employment.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that the suspect is in custody and said preliminary inquiries indicate that he admitted to disguising himself as a woman.
“He is currently being held as investigations continue, and he will be taken to court once inquiries are complete,” police said.
The case has renewed calls from security authorities for households to carry out proper background checks and verify the identities of domestic workers before employment.
Kayaga remains detained at Nateete Police Post as police continue gathering evidence.
