A geography study tour ended in tragedy after a school bus carrying students from St. Paul Secondary School, Katakwi, was involved in a fatal road crash in Bugweri District, claiming the life of the driver and leaving 15 others injured.

The accident occurred at approximately 4:45 a.m. on 14 July 2026 at Nawangisa Village along the Mbale–Iganga Highway. The Isuzu bus (registration number UA 551ED), owned by Amuria High School, was transporting 73 students to Kasenyi Landing Site in Entebbe for a geography study tour when it crashed into the rear of a stationary Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer (registration number UBB 269V).

The deceased was identified as Kasakya Abdallah, 68, the driver of the bus, who died instantly on impact. The injured include 13 students, one teacher, and the bus conductor, all of whom sustained injuries of varying severity.

Preliminary investigations by the Uganda Police Force indicate that the bus was travelling from Mbale when the collision occurred. Traffic officers led by the Regional Traffic Officer responded to the scene, documented the incident, and conveyed the deceased's body to Iganga Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

In a statement issued on 14 July 2026, ASP Michael Kasadha, the Regional Police Spokesperson for the Busoga East Region, confirmed that the injured victims were rushed to Iganga General Hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment.

The two vehicles involved in the crash have since been towed to Busembatya Police Station pending mechanical inspection as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.

The Uganda Police Force extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the a swift recovery. Police also renewed their appeal to motorists and all road users to exercise maximum caution, strictly observe traffic regulations, and remain vigilant while using the country's roads to help prevent similar tragedies.
