SOROTI – Soroti Regional Referral Hospital has unveiled a new 13-member Management Board, marking the beginning of a renewed effort to strengthen governance, accountability and healthcare service delivery at one of eastern Uganda's largest referral health facilities.

The new board was officially sworn in on July 7, 2026, at Akello Hotel in Soroti during a ceremony officiated by Uganda's State Minister for Health (General Duties), Anifa Kawooya Bangirana. The board will serve a three-year term and is expected to provide strategic oversight while supporting management in improving the quality of healthcare services.

Soroti District LC5 Chairperson Bob Owiny welcomed the appointment of the new board, describing it as a timely intervention for an institution that plays a critical role in providing specialized healthcare services to the people of the Teso sub-region and neighbouring districts.

Owiny urged the board members to uphold integrity, teamwork and accountability in the execution of their duties, noting that the hospital requires strong leadership capable of addressing service delivery challenges while ensuring that patients remain at the centre of every decision.

He also appealed to the board to work closely with the hospital management, district local governments and the Ministry of Health to promote transparency, improve efficiency and strengthen public confidence in the referral hospital.

The board is chaired by Dr. John Opolot of Kumi District and comprises Eng. Allan Dikens Ouga (Kapelebyong), Margaret Aguti (Katakwi), Samuel Isodo (Ngora), John Kauta (Ministry of Health), Angela Koreyeny Cheptoyek (Head of Nursing), Florence Nabukwasi (Chief Administrative Officer, Amuria), Rev. Sir Dr. Francis Clare (Health Workers' Representative, Katakwi), Dr. Emmanuel Okallany Odeke (District Health Officer, Bukedea), James Gregory Okello (Soroti University), Dr. Benedict Watmon (Hospital Director and Board Secretary), Benzy Omoya (Principal Hospital Administrator) and Francis Oboi (Head of Pharmacy).

Hospital Director Dr. Benedict Watmon said the multidisciplinary composition of the board will provide strategic oversight, strengthen institutional accountability and support the hospital management in delivering quality, efficient and patient-centred healthcare services.

Principal Hospital Administrator Benzy Omoya pledged the full cooperation of the hospital administration, saying management is committed to working closely with the board to achieve the hospital's objectives and improve service delivery.

Speaking on behalf of the board, Chairperson Dr. John Opolot pledged to work collaboratively with all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health, local governments and development partners, to enhance governance and raise healthcare standards at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital.

He said the board is committed to promoting transparency, accountability and professionalism while ensuring the hospital continues to meet the growing healthcare needs of communities across the Teso sub-region and beyond.

The inauguration of the new management board is expected to reinforce governance structures at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital and support ongoing efforts to improve the quality, accessibility and efficiency of healthcare services for thousands of patients who seek treatment at the facility each year.
