In a move to transform the agricultural landscape of Palisa District, Vice President Jessica Alupo launched a comprehensive support program for farmers early yesterday at Adal Primary School.
The initiative aims to boost productivity, improve livelihoods, and empower farmers to become key players in the country's agricultural sector.
Alupo handed over four handheld tractors to farmer groups in Gogonyo County, promising to provide one tractor for every sub-county in the county. This move is expected to revolutionize farming in the region, making it easier and more efficient.
The Vice President also pledged to lobby for 10,000 hoes for the people of Gogonyo, to be delivered by MP Orone Derrick. This initiative aims to support small-scale farmers and encourage them to transition to large-scale farming, increasing their income and competitiveness.
In addition, Alupo announced plans to introduce a value-addition factory for cassava, a crop abundant in the sub-region. This will provide farmers with a market for their produce, increasing their earnings and reducing post-harvest losses.
Alupo announced plans to support dairy farming to produce mixed Friesian cows for milk production, which can produce up to 15 liters of milk per day. This initiative aims to provide a reliable source of income for farmers.
Alupo also encouraged farmers to explore poultry keeping, piggery, and fruit farming, citing the reliable market for these products. By diversifying their farming activities, farmers can increase their income, reduce dependence on a single crop, and build resilience against climate change.
Orone Derrick, MP for Gogonyo County, hailed the initiative as a game-changer for his constituents.
He noted that the support of 2,000 hoes is a fulfillment of his 2021 pledge to support different groups in his constituency and commended the Vice President for her commitment to agricultural development.
Various farmers who spoke to this website praised the leaders for their unity, noting that the donation will have a significant impact on their SACCOs (Savings and Credit Cooperatives). They expressed gratitude for the leaders' collaborative effort, which they believe will bring about meaningful change and improvement to their farming activities.
