BUKEDEA - In a dramatic turn of events, Wilbrod Oile, the beleaguered Head of Kabarwa Police Station, was ousted from his position following a furious backlash from local residents and two days of intense house detention.
The upheaval began when outraged locals protested against alleged corruption and the police's failure to ensure their safety. The demonstration quickly escalated, bringing Kabarwa Police Station to a standstill and causing some officers to flee the scene.
The trouble erupted early Thursday morning at around 6:00 a.m. as a large crowd of residents surrounded the police station, forcing Officer Oile to take refuge in his own home.
The spark for the protests was an alarming incident on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, when an unidentified gang violently attacked residents near the police station. Despite the urgency, law enforcement reportedly failed to respond, leaving three victims, including a student from a nearby school, with severe injuries.
Local resident Julius Odeke voiced his anger over the police’s inaction, condemning their failure to address the violent attack that left the victims critically wounded. His frustration echoed the broader discontent among residents about the police's inability to protect the community.
Adding fuel to the fire, Bashir Otim, another local, accused the Kabarwa police of lethargy, claiming they had intelligence on the culprits yet did nothing to prevent the violence.
Ben Angura, LC3 Chairman of Kabarwa Sub County, backed these accusations, revealing that similar violent incidents had occurred previously with no action from law enforcement. He also reported that some residents had been attacking others, seizing property, and even setting homes and motorcycles ablaze, all while the police stood by.
By Friday evening, the situation reached its peak as Officer Oile emerged from his residence, directed to pack his belongings under the watchful eyes of the community. He later told our correspondent via telephone that he has been reassigned to bolster security at Bukedea Comprehensive School, preparing for the East African Games in Bukedea District.
