The Amuria District Woman Member of Parliament, Margaret Etilu, has been released after several days of uncertainty surrounding her whereabouts, sources confirm.
The legislator, who had not been seen in public for more than two weeks, is reported to be in good health following her release today’s evening. Her reappearance comes after growing concern from family members, constituents in Amuria District, and fellow Members of Parliament over her sudden disappearance from public view.
Her release follows earlier assurances made in Parliament by Vice President Jessica Alupo, who told legislators that Etilu would be returning within the week and that government authorities were aware of her situation and safety.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja also previously informed Parliament that the government knew the MP’s whereabouts and that arrangements for her release had been concluded.
Etilu was last seen publicly on May 23, shortly after reportedly leaving the residence of former Speaker Anita Annet Among in Nakasero, Kampala. Her disappearance triggered widespread speculation and concern, with reports suggesting she was picked up by security operatives, although no official agency confirmed her detention.
The incident sparked political debate in Parliament, with members of the Teso Parliamentary Group demanding clarification on her status. Opposition leaders, including Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, also raised concerns over due process and prolonged detention without public explanation.
Etilu, a member of the ruling National Resistance Movement, is a newly elected legislator in the 12th Parliament and has missed several key parliamentary engagements during her absence.
