SOROTI CITY :The Deputy Resident City Commissioner (DRCC) for Soroti City East Division, Claire Ayipo, has challenged the newly inaugurated Board of Soroti Regional Referral Hospital to make the fight against extortion by some hospital staff a top priority, saying the vice has tarnished the institution's image and undermined public confidence.

Speaking during the inauguration of the new hospital board, Ayipo said members of the public have repeatedly raised concerns about allegations that some junior health workers demand money from patients before providing services that are supposed to be offered free of charge.

She noted that such practices have created a negative perception of Soroti Regional Referral Hospital among the communities it serves, despite the efforts of many dedicated health workers.

"The hospital's reputation has been affected by complaints of extortion. As the new board, you have a responsibility to work with management and all staff to eliminate this practice and restore public trust," Ayipo said.

She emphasized that the board should not work in isolation but instead collaborate closely with the hospital administration, medical personnel, support staff and other stakeholders to strengthen accountability and improve service delivery.

"I know you are not going to work alone. You must work together with other staff members to address the challenge of extortion and ensure patients receive quality healthcare with dignity and respect," she added.

Ayipo further urged the board to prioritize rebuilding the hospital's public image by promoting transparency, professionalism and ethical conduct among all employees.

She stressed that Soroti Regional Referral Hospital exists to serve the people and should remain accessible to every patient without unlawful charges or exploitation.

"The hospital belongs to the community. If your efforts are not coordinated with the entire workforce, it will be difficult for the public to appreciate the improvements you are making," she said.

The newly inaugurated board is expected to provide strategic oversight, strengthen governance and support reforms aimed at enhancing accountability, improving service delivery and restoring confidence in one of eastern Uganda's key referral health facilities.
