Police and military forces shut down the newly opened China Town hypermarket on Monday evening, citing a potential terrorist threat. The hypermarket, located in Lugogo, was cordoned off during the evening rush hour as dozens of officers were deployed to the scene.
Shoppers were quickly evacuated, with one officer urging them to leave the store immediately, announcing through a megaphone, "Please leave now; we have a terror threat. You can come back tomorrow."
At the time, the parking lot at Lugogo mall was nearly full, reflecting the busy activity in the area. Signs were placed at the store's entrance indicating its closure.
This incident follows a recent warning from the American Embassy, which highlighted an "increased risk of terrorist attacks in Kampala." The embassy advised its citizens to exercise heightened caution in public spaces such as malls, schools, and tourist hotspots.
Similarly, the United Nations mission reported gathering intelligence on potential terrorist threats in Kampala. The mission's security alert emphasized the increased risk of attacks around the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, noting the unpredictable nature of terrorist activities.
Police spokesman Kituma Rusoke acknowledged the security alerts, coinciding with the anniversary, a date historically associated with terrorist activity. However, Rusoke reassured the public of the Uganda Police's unwavering vigilance and effective countermeasures.
"Our alertness and countermeasures as Uganda Police have been consistent," Rusoke stated. "However, it is also important for people to maintain their level of alertness. When you visit malls and other public places, you can see that many have become complacent, but this should not cause alarm."
