Soroti City HIV/AIDS Committee Rallies for Collective Action Amidst High Prevalence

SOROTI - The Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) for Soroti City West, Mr. Chemutai James Small, chaired a meeting of the Soroti City HIV/AIDS Committee today, expressing appreciation for the commitment shown by stakeholders in reducing the burden of HIV/AIDS.

 

Despite this dedication, the prevalence rate in Soroti City remains concerningly high, prompting a call for increased efforts to combat the epidemic in both the city and the wider Teso.

 

Mr. Chemutai recognized the tireless work of the committee and stakeholders in addressing HIV/AIDS challenges while emphasizing the significance of their dedication, expertise, and the essential support provided by Implementing Partners (IPs).

 

He reminded the committee of Soroti City's HIV prevalence rate, which stands at 12%, according to a report by the Monitor newspaper. Soroti has been identified as one of the hotspots for HIV/AIDS, and while progress has been made, Mr. Chemutai stressed that much more needs to be done.

 

The Deputy RCC outlined the key objectives of the meeting that include;

 

1. Review the current HIV/AIDS situation in Soroti City.

 

2. Discuss strategies to increase testing, treatment, and retention rates.

 

3. Enhance collaboration among stakeholders to maximize impact.

 

4. Identify resource gaps and explore potential solutions to address them.

 

Through collective action, the committee aims to achieve the following:

 

1. Reduce new HIV infections by promoting awareness, testing, and preventive measures.

 

2. Improve treatment outcomes by ensuring that those diagnosed receive proper care and support.

 

3. End stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS, fostering a more supportive environment for affected individuals.

 

Mr. Chemutai urged all stakeholders to actively participate by sharing their insights and expertise. He emphasized the importance of developing a comprehensive action plan that would contribute to the betterment of Soroti City.

 

He further advocated for a strong and spirited community effort, stressing the need for greater community participation. "Our goal is to create a healthier and more supportive environment, not just for Soroti, but for the entire Teso sub-region and Uganda as a whole," Mr. Chemutai stated.

 

The meeting concluded with a resounding call for collaboration, with Mr. Chemutai emphasizing that through collective efforts, the challenges of HIV/AIDS can be addressed more effectively, creating a healthier future for all.
