Soroti, Uganda – In a world where hardship often goes unnoticed, a single act of kindness can reignite hope. For Amito Mariam, a devoted mother from Soroti City East, life has been an uphill battle—one she has fought with unwavering strength.
Raising a daughter with disabilities while struggling to make ends meet, Mariam had one simple wish: to earn a living through tailoring so she could provide for her children.
But on Valentine’s Day, what she thought was just another day of struggle turned into an unforgettable moment of joy. At the main office of Action of Love International, Mariam was left in shock when the organization’s CEO, Jefferson Kandi, handed her a brand-new sewing machine—free of charge.
For a moment, she was speechless. Then came the tears.
“I have been struggling for five years, staying home with no job, barely surviving on small tailoring gigs,” Mariam said, wiping away tears as a smile spread across her face. “I never imagined that someone would just give me a machine. This is more than a gift; it’s a lifeline.”
Mariam’s daughter, just five years old, has faced immense challenges since birth. She cannot hear, struggles to walk, and requires urgent medical care. Though overwhelmed with gratitude, Mariam made one more heartfelt plea: “I only wish my daughter could get the treatment she needs to start walking. That is my biggest dream.”
For Jefferson Kandi, the joy of giving is its own reward. He recalled the moment Mariam posted in the organization’s WhatsApp group, asking for work so she could save up for a sewing machine. “When I read her message, I knew we had to do something. No mother should have to struggle alone,” he said.
Kandi urged others to step up in support of single mothers raising children with disabilities. “They carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. If we don’t help, who will? This is how we break the cycle of poverty—by lifting each other up.”
Since its inception, Action of Love International has transformed countless lives through acts of kindness. This latest gesture is a reminder that even the smallest stitch of hope can mend the fabric of a struggling life.
And for Mariam, this was more than just a machine—it was proof that love, even from strangers, can change everything.
