SOROTI - The Iteso Cultural Union Prime Minister, Mr. Andrew Ocole, has called on the Teso community to prepare their gardens for the first rains, emphasizing the importance of this step in addressing food insecurity caused by prolonged droughts.

Speaking on Saturday afternoon at the leadership handover of the Irarak Icomia clan in Ocomia Village, Soroti District, Mr. Ocole stressed that a good harvest could also help parents raise school fees for their children’s second term.

During the event, Mze Omuron, who served as clan chairman for 30 years, officially handed over leadership to Mr. Jimmy Oriokot.

Mr. Ocole further encouraged the Ateker people, especially the youth, to avoid laziness and instead utilize the abundant land resources available to improve their livelihoods. He pointed out that while 99% of the people in Teso largely depend on farming, over 65% of the land remains underutilized, contributing to poverty in many households.

He urged the community to invest in agriculture, particularly mixed farming, to maximize land use and ensure food security.

Additionally, Mr. Ocole highlighted that the office of Papa Emorimor is actively working to combat poverty, bridge education gaps, and address critical issues such as land disputes and gender-based violence.

He called upon the newly sworn-in leaders to align themselves with the Iteso Cultural Union’s initiatives to transform their communities.

Emorimor is set to continue his grassroots tours, beginning with Soroti District, as he concludes his engagements in Teso North.
