Running under the National Unity Platform (NUP), Akiso polled 3,585 votes, defeating Tony Bwete, who garnered 2,340 votes, while Emmanuel Andama came in third with 1,103 votes.
His victory has been widely celebrated as a triumph for student representation, with many supporters highlighting his commitment to addressing pressing student concerns, including the surcharge policy.
"This victory belongs to the students of Kyambogo University. It is a statement that the voices of the students cannot be suppressed. My first priority will be tackling the surcharge policy, ensuring fairness and justice for every student," Akiso stated in his victory speech.
Election Day Tensions and Student Resistance
The election process was not without controversy. Tensions flared when police attempted to arrest Akiso on election day, leading to unrest as students resisted the move. The incident underscored the growing friction between student activism and state enforcement agencies in university politics.
Despite the challenges, Akiso’s victory has been recognized by the National Unity Platform, which commended students for standing firm. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the party wrote:
"Congratulations comrade Akiso Benjamin on your victory as the 21st Guild President of Kyambogo University. The power of students has prevailed over the state brutality that featured in your entire campaign trail. Your victory belongs to the common students. Offer them deserving service in your tenure."
Akiso also took to X to express gratitude to his supporters, reflecting on the journey that led to his election:
"At first it was an idea, then it turned into a message of hope, and now it's a reality. I take this wonderful moment to thank the oppressed students for making a statement. The education revolution is on! Behold The 21st Guild President of Kyambogo University."
