Kampala, Uganda - City lawyer Joshua Okello has praised Hon. Captain Mike Mukula for his pivotal role in saving his sight, describing the intervention as life-changing. In a heartfelt tribute, Okello shared how Mukula’s timely recommendation to seek medical treatment at Madera School for the Blind helped him avoid permanent blindness.
The emotional recount came during a visit to Mukula's residence in Bugolobi, where Okello, now a successful lawyer, took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the former aviation minister and prominent political figure. Okello recalled the critical time in his life when his deteriorating vision threatened to take away his sight permanently. “Had it not been for Captain Mike Mukula’s recommendation and guidance, I would now be a blind man,” Okello shared.
At the time, Okello was grappling with a serious eye condition that required urgent intervention. Mukula, recognizing the gravity of the situation, encouraged Okello to seek treatment at Madera School for the Blind, where he was able to continue his education while receiving care. This decision, according to Okello, played a major role in preserving his eyesight and enabling him to pursue his legal career.
Mukula, who is well-known for his leadership during Uganda's turbulent past, especially during the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency, has always been regarded for his compassion and servant leadership. During the insurgency, Mukula was instrumental in forming the Arrow Boys militia, a group that played a vital role in securing the Teso region from rebel forces. However, it is his acts of kindness and leadership in everyday matters, such as supporting Okello, that have left a lasting impact on many lives.
In their conversation, Okello reflected on Mukula’s leadership style, drawing parallels with biblical principles of servant leadership. “Mike Mukula is a man who embodies the values of humility, service, and faith, much like the leaders in the Bible who led by putting others first,” Okello remarked. “He has always demonstrated a selfless commitment to the welfare of others.”
Okello’s experience with Mukula highlights the deep personal connection that many Ugandans have with the former minister, who continues to be seen as a source of guidance, faith, and unwavering support. His leadership transcends politics, offering a powerful example of how genuine care for others can change lives in profound ways.
As Okello expressed his thanks during the visit, it became clear that Mukula’s influence reaches far beyond his public career. For Okello, Mukula’s advice and intervention were crucial not only for preserving his sight but also for providing him with the confidence and opportunity to move forward in life. “This is a debt of gratitude that I will forever carry with me,” Okello concluded.
Hon. Mike Mukula, for his part, humbly acknowledged Okello’s kind words, emphasizing that his actions were driven by a strong belief in the power of community and the importance of helping those in need. His commitment to leadership, grounded in faith and service to others, continues to inspire those around him.
Okello’s tribute is a reminder of the profound impact that one act of kindness can have on an individual's life, and the lasting legacy of leadership that extends far beyond titles and accolades.
