Juba, South Sudan – Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni arrived in Juba, South Sudan, today for a working visit at the invitation of South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit. The two leaders are scheduled to hold high-level discussions on strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation between their nations.

Upon his arrival, President Museveni shared a message on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “I have arrived in South Sudan at the invitation of His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit. I look forward to our discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation between our two nations.”

President Museveni’s visit comes at a critical juncture, as South Sudan grapples with escalating political tensions that threaten regional stability. The situation in the country has deteriorated significantly following the house arrest of First Vice President Riek Machar, who stands accused by President Kiir’s government of inciting rebellion and being linked to recent violent clashes in the Upper Nile state.

These developments have raised alarm across the international community, with fears mounting that the nation could be on the brink of a return to the brutal conflict that devastated the country from 2013 to 2018. The civil war claimed the lives of nearly 400,000 people and displaced almost a third of the population, leaving a lasting impact on the country’s social and economic fabric.

President Museveni’s visit underscores Uganda’s vested interest in the stability of South Sudan, given the countries’ strong economic ties and mutual interests. Uganda is one of South Sudan’s key trading partners, exporting goods to the country annually, while Uganda also hosts a significant number of South Sudanese refugees. These close connections highlight the importance of stability in South Sudan for the broader region’s prosperity and peace.

The outcome of the talks between Presidents Museveni and Kiir is expected to significantly impact the current political deadlock in South Sudan. As the country stands at a crossroads, the involvement of neighboring leaders like President Museveni, along with the support of international bodies, will be critical in steering South Sudan toward a path of lasting peace and stability.
