SOROTI – Former National Unity Platform (NUP) strong woman and Soroti City Woman MP flagbearer, Asio Grace Ongorok, has revealed that she is awaiting a formal baptism from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Asio made the remarks on Friday during the Office of the National Chairman (ONC) Empowerment event held at Katine Primary School in Soroti District.

She admitted to joining the NRM during the heated Soroti City East by-election.

Asio’s defection from the NUP, where she once carried the flag for Soroti City Woman MP and garnered 596 votes in the 2021 elections, shocked many opposition supporters. However, she cited dissatisfaction with NUP’s leadership style, which she described as “non-inclusive,” and expressed frustration over the party’s support for Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Moses Attan as she opted to stand by the NRM party candidate.

Her appearance and public declaration at the ONC event marked another step in her political transition from the opposition to the ruling party, as she now awaits formal endorsement by the NRM.

As the 2026 elections approach, political observers will be keen to see how Asio’s journey within the NRM unfolds and whether she will be fully embraced by the party structures.
