Soroti City – The Church of Uganda Diocese of Soroti and the wider Anglican community are mourning the death of Jane Okodi, the former principal of Soroti Comprehensive Nursing School, who passed on recently.
During a requiem service held at St. Peter’s Cathedral Church of Uganda in Soroti City, the Rt. Rev. Kosea Odongo, bishop of the diocese, described the late Okodi as a devoted Christian who loved and served both her family and the Church with unwavering faith.
"Jane was a woman of strong character and devotion. She loved the Lord and dedicated her life to serving others," Bishop Odongo said. He used the occasion to encourage Christians to live in peace and forgive one another. "No one ever gets used to death. We grieve, but we must also continue to live harmoniously and pray for the souls of our departed loved ones."
The retired bishops, Rt. Rev. Bernard Obaikol and Rt. Rev. George William Erawu, also paid tribute to Okodi, describing her as a generous and humanitarian leader who played a pivotal role in the development of health education in the Teso sub-region.
Teso and Uganda at large have lost a mother, a mentor, and a chancellor, they said, encouraging the bereaved family to carry forward her legacy.
Francis Etomet, the current principal of Soroti Comprehensive Nursing School, said Okodi was an exemplary leader whose intelligence and calm demeanor left a lasting impression. From the moment I met her, I admired her brilliance and problem-solving abilities. She inspired me to lead with integrity and wisdom, Etomet noted.
Former Soroti mayor, George Michael Egunyu, urged mourners to emulate the late Okodi by portraying good character within their communities. He also echoed the bishop’s call for forgiveness and unity. She was a woman who lived her life with grace. Let us strive to be remembered in the same way, he said.
Hon. Herbert Edmund Ariko, the Member of Parliament for Soroti City West, described Okodi as a supportive and intelligent woman who stood with him during both good times and challenging political moments—especially during the 2021 elections.
She had a sharp mind and was always willing to offer guidance. Her ability to mentor and support others was unmatched, Ariko said.
The late Jane Okodi is remembered for her tireless contributions to education, mentorship, and community service. Her legacy continues to inspire many across the region.
