As economic challenges deepen in Soroti City, the business community in Juakali has voiced growing concerns over what they describe as excessive taxation and harsh treatment by security personnel. During a recent engagement with Isaac Orego, an aspiring Member of Parliament for Soroti City East Division under NRM ticket ,traders appealed for urgent intervention.
Namusack Penita, a roadside vendor in Juakali, shared her frustrations during the interaction. She cited high taxes imposed on small businesses and additional fees levied by security personnel as key issues suffocating their operations.
“The leaders coming into office should focus on solving what the current ones have failed to do,” she stated.
Namulobi Shamim, Chairperson of the Garden Womens Association, expressed gratitude for Orego’s visit, noting that despite their efforts to make ends meet, they are often chased off the streets and burdened with heavy taxation. “This treatment makes life very difficult for us,” she said.
In response, Orego pledged to be a voice for the business community if elected into office. “I will work with city authorities to address the issue of overtaxation and ensure fair treatment of small business owners,” he promised.
He emphasized that empowering small businesses would boost local economies and enable parents to educate their children.
Orego further committed to providing financial support to organized business groups, pledging five million shillings to boost their ventures. He criticized the practice of collecting taxes early in the morning before traders make any income and vowed to engage the city leadership on policy reforms.
“As money grows, it creates a ripple effect that transforms families,” Orego said. “My mission is to create that impact.”
The business community expressed hope that if elected, Orego would be a transformative leader who prioritizes the needs of ordinary citizens.
