Soroti City: Alfred Atwau, a seasoned journalist with Etop Radio and a proud student of United Media Consultants and Trainers (UMCAT)-Soroti Campus , has officially declared his candidacy for the Guild Presidency at the institution.

Atwau made the announcement during a press briefing after collecting nomination forms, expressing confidence in his leadership abilities and a strong commitment to student empowerment.

A familiar face in the Teso media landscape, Atwau began his journalism career at Radio Joshua in Katakwi before enrolling at UMCAT in 2022.

He successfully completed a National Certificate in Journalism and Mass Media Studies and is currently pursuing a National Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication.

With professional experience spanning roles at TV East and now Etop Radio as a senior news reporter, Atwau brings a wealth of industry knowledge to the race.

His deep engagement with communities and public affairs, he believes, positions him uniquely to lead the student body.

In his address, Atwau outlined key issues facing the institution, particularly the under-resourced computer laboratory and studio facilities essential for hands-on training.

He pledged to prioritize partnerships with development agencies and national stakeholders to improve learning infrastructure and student welfare.

“Our ICT and journalism departments are struggling,” Atwau stated. “We need leaders who can bridge the gap between the school and national stakeholders like the Ministry of Education. If elected, I will champion hands-on training and ensure students get the practical exposure they need.”

Tobias Elapu, UMCAT’s journalism patron and chairperson of the electoral commission, confirmed Atwau’s nomination and emphasized the school’s commitment to non-partisan, issue-based student politics.

“We encourage issue-based campaigns and discourage any form of political hostility,” Elapu said. He also confirmed that the student elections are scheduled to take place between May 7th and 9th, with the swearing-in ceremony planned for May 16th.

Students have already begun expressing support for Atwau’s candidacy. Abeja Joyce Mary, Aaron Otim, and Aboyo Martha spoke highly of his media expertise and leadership potential, highlighting his strong public profile as a valuable asset in representing student interests.

With a campaign rooted in experience, integrity, and advocacy, Alfred Atwau enters the UMCAT Guild Presidency race with a clear vision to uplift the institution and empower its student body.
