Serere District – Christians under the Serere Archdeaconry of the Church of Uganda, Diocese of Soroti, have officially launched the construction of a new St. Mark Church, a landmark project estimated to cost UGX 1.5 billion.

The initiative marks a significant milestone in the spiritual and infrastructural growth of the local Christian community. The planned church, once completed, will accommodate up to 3,000 worshippers—an enormous improvement from the current building that holds only 300.

Rev. Canon David Epongu Opio, the Archdeacon of Serere Archdeaconry, shared that the project is expected to take three years. He emphasized that the new church is not just a structure, but a symbol of faith and unity among Christians in the region.

He expressed deep appreciation to the Rt. Rev. Kosea Odongo, Bishop of Soroti Diocese, for championing the fundraising efforts. Through his leadership, UGX 70 million has already been raised, which facilitated the groundbreaking and commissioning of the construction project.

“Various archdeaconries and parishes within the diocese have submitted budgets aimed at supporting the construction of the church,” Rev. Epongu noted, calling on continued support and prayers from the Christian community and well-wishers.

Samuel Agwelu, the Lay Reader of St. Mark Church, stressed the importance of unity and shared responsibility in realizing the vision of a new place of worship. He appealed to Christians and friends of the church to contribute in whatever way they can—financially, materially, or spiritually.

Despite existing financial challenges, the Christians of Serere remain steadfast in their commitment to the project, driven by a collective desire to grow spiritually and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
