Serere District – The Serere District Local Government has launched a UGX 200 million water supply project aimed at improving access to clean and safe water in underserved communities. The project will see the construction of three solar-powered production wells in Kadugulu, Pigire, and Labori sub-counties.
The initiative is expected to benefit over 100 villages and significantly reduce the burden of water collection for thousands of households.
Speaking at the launch, Steven Ochola, the District Local Council V Chairperson, emphasized the project’s importance in addressing long-standing challenges related to water scarcity in rural areas.
“This project marks a significant step in our efforts to improve the livelihoods of our people. Access to clean water is not just a basic need—it’s a foundation for good health, education, and economic development. These wells will serve both domestic and agricultural purposes, especially during dry seasons,” Ochola stated.
He urged residents to take responsibility for safeguarding the infrastructure, particularly the solar-powered systems, from theft and vandalism to ensure sustainability and long-term service delivery.
Robert Adiama, the Serere Resident District Commissioner, echoed the same sentiments, warning against acts that could damage or compromise the newly constructed boreholes.
“Dropping foreign objects into boreholes or tampering with solar equipment delays development and wastes resources. It is our collective duty to protect these community assets,” Adiama said.
The project, scheduled for completion by June 30, integrates renewable energy to support year-round water access. It aligns with Uganda’s broader national objectives of expanding rural water coverage and promoting environmentally friendly infrastructure.
Residents in the beneficiary sub-counties welcomed the development, expressing hope that the new water systems would reduce travel distances, improve hygiene, and support small-scale farming.
As implementation progresses, the Serere District leadership remains committed to working closely with communities to ensure the success and sustainability of the project.ll
