In a groundbreaking development for the country’s healthcare system, Soroti Regional Referral Hospital has officially become the first medical facility in Uganda to acquire and commission a fully digital X-ray machine. Hon. Ongalo Obote Kenneth, State Minister for Teso Affairs and Member of Parliament for Kalaki District presided over the landmark event.

The procurement of the cutting-edge diagnostic equipment was made possible through a UGX 600 million contribution from the Ministry of Teso Affairs, signaling the government's commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure in underserved regions.

“This is a historic step in improving access to modern medical diagnostics for our people,” said Hon. Ongalo during the commissioning ceremony. “The government is dedicated to transforming healthcare, and this machine is a testament to that commitment. I urge the people to acknowledge how far we have come under this administration.”

The digital X-ray machine is expected to greatly enhance diagnostic capabilities at Soroti Regional Hospital, offering faster, more accurate imaging and eliminating the need for patients to travel long distances to access such services.

Dr. Benedicto Watmon, the Hospital Director, confirmed that the X-ray services would be provided free of charge to the public.

“This machine will serve thousands of patients every year,” Dr. Watmon noted. “Our radiology team is fully trained and ready to operate the equipment. We are proud to be at the forefront of medical innovation in Uganda.”

Dr. Ojome Vincent, Chairperson of the Hospital Board, emphasized that the project took over two financial years to complete due to its technical and financial demands.

“It has been a long journey, but the result is worth it. This is currently the most advanced X-ray machine in the country, and it places Soroti on the map as a leader in regional healthcare,” Dr. Ojome stated.

Juliet Ipagi, Deputy Mayor of Soroti City, expressed her gratitude to the government and the Ministry of Teso Affairs, highlighting how the new equipment will alleviate long-standing challenges for residents.

“For years, our people have struggled to access X-ray services due to distance and lack of facilities,” she said. “This installation will make a real difference in our communities.”

The commissioning of Uganda’s first digital X-ray machine marks a significant milestone not just for Soroti, but for the nation’s broader push toward digitized and decentralized healthcare service
