Serere District - Acom Esther Lucy, a seasoned Certified Public Accountant with over 14 years of professional experience, has officially entered the political arena by picking nomination forms to contest for the Woman Member of Parliament seat in Serere District ahead of the 2026 general elections.
With a firm tone and a clear agenda, Acom declared her commitment to championing women’s empowerment, improving service delivery in education and healthcare, and driving inclusive economic development across the district.
“It’s time for new commitments, not the old, for it’s the new brooms that know how to sweep well,” Acom told journalists shortly after receiving her nomination forms. She decried what she termed as years of marginalization and poor leadership in Serere, saying that the local population had been left "financially malnourished."
Acom’s entry into the race signals a notable shift in Serere’s political landscape. Having supported the incumbent minister in previous election cycles, she now believes that the time has come for fresh leadership.
“The Minister has done her part, and it's failed. Democracy gives every qualified person the right to stand,” Acom said when asked why she was challenging the current officeholder.
Central to her campaign is a strong emphasis on financial literacy and sustainable economic empowerment. She criticized the conventional model of merely injecting money into Saccos and village savings groups without adequate education on savings culture and entrepreneurship.
“We must go beyond disbursing funds. We need to teach our people the value of saving and how to turn their small ideas into viable enterprises,” she emphasized.
Acom also pledged to advocate for women’s rights, youth inclusion, and equitable service delivery, saying her leadership would prioritize the real needs of Serere residents.
Her candidacy comes at a time when youthful and professionally accomplished individuals are increasingly stepping forward to challenge long-serving politicians. Political analysts observe that Acom’s entry adds a dynamic layer to the Serere Woman MP race, potentially disrupting the status quo.
Sources close to the incumbent minister suggest growing concern over Acom’s rising popularity and the increasing momentum of her grassroots support. With political temperatures rising, residents of Serere District appear more engaged than ever, hopeful for a future built on accountability, progress, and inclusive development.
