Akuoro Restore Hope Initiative Uganda (RHOI-Uganda), with vital support from its development partners in Germany, today inaugurated a pilot poultry project aimed at significantly reducing malnutrition and high poverty rates within communities in Kyere subcounty.

The launch ceremony took place at RHOI-Uganda's offices in Akuoro village, Olupe Parish, Kyere subcounty, Serere district. The initial phase of the project targets three selected families, each receiving 10 chicks, marking a crucial step towards broader community development.

Mr. Solomon Okiror, the Executive Director of RHOI-Uganda, highlighted the urgent need for the intervention, citing findings from a recent community needs assessment. "During the needs assessment that we conducted, we realized that there is malnutrition among children in communities of Olupe parish and also high poverty levels," Mr. Okiror stated.

He further explained the dual benefits anticipated from the project. "When these families raise these chickens, they will be able to have eggs and hence address malnutrition, and also sell the chicken to buy goats, sheep or cattle," he added, outlining a sustainable pathway out of poverty through livestock farming.

The pilot study is designed to gather essential data and insights before the initiative is eventually rolled out to the entire community of Akuoro-Olupe, aiming for a wider impact across the region.

Beneficiaries of the novel project expressed profound gratitude for RHOI-Uganda's forward-thinking initiative. "I am grateful to RHOI-Uganda for thinking about us," shared Phoebe, one of the beneficiaries. "I am going to take good care of these chicks and later buy goats and improve on our livelihood."

The poultry project represents a beacon of hope for communities grappling with food insecurity and economic hardship, promising a tangible step towards improved health and sustainable livelihoods in Serere district.
