SOROTI CITY — Uganda People's Congress (UPC) Party President and 2026 presidential aspirant Jimmy Akena Obote has firmly denied allegations of collaborating with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), stating that the UPC remains an independent political entity committed to change.

Speaking during the UPC Delegate Conference held at Akello Hotel in Soroti City, where representatives from all Teso sub-region districts were present, Akena dismissed claims of political alignment with the NRM as baseless.

“I speak for the UPC and the UPC alone,” Akena declared. “If anyone claims otherwise, let them bring evidence. I have not entered into any agreement or collaboration with NRM.”

Akena used the platform to reaffirm his intention to contest in the 2026 presidential elections, positioning himself as a candidate committed to UPC's founding values and a new direction for Uganda. “We are ready to bring meaningful change to this country,” he told the delegates, emphasizing that his vision is rooted in national transformation and party unity.

The conference served not only to address the allegations but also to galvanize support for UPC ahead of the 2026 polls.

Party leaders and aspirants in attendance voiced strong support for Akena’s leadership. Joseph Ochen, Deputy Mayor of Soroti City West Division and a UPC stalwart, praised Akena’s direction and leadership style, calling on members to rally behind him.

“Akena's leadership is what we need to rebuild and strengthen UPC,” Ochen said. “With him, we’re confident of regaining our place in Uganda’s political future.”

Ketty Akol, an LC5 Chairperson aspirant for Kapelebyong District, echoed this enthusiasm. “We are ready to storm the ground and win Kapelebyong for UPC,” she said, expressing confidence that the party can make significant gains under Akena's guidance.

Joseph Elotu, UPC mobilizer in Kalaki District, also voiced optimism, stating that UPC will be revitalized in the Teso sub-region and across the country. “Our members have hope again. Akena has ignited that hope,” Elotu noted.

As the 2026 elections approach, Akena’s leadership and the unity within UPC will likely come under further scrutiny. However, the widespread support shown at the Soroti Delegate Conference suggests a rejuvenated party with eyes set firmly on the national stage.
