Soroti City - As the countdown to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries continues, Soroti City East Division witnessed an extraordinary show of political strength on Friday, as parliamentary aspirant Isaac Orego staged a massive campaign rally that brought business in the central business district to a temporary standstill.

Orego, who is vying for the NRM flag for Soroti City East, led a spirited procession through the city’s main streets, directly engaging residents and outlining a bold, pro-development agenda. The turnout—numbering in the thousands—reflected the growing momentum behind his candidacy.

The procession culminated at Soroti Main Market, where Orego addressed a large crowd of vendors and small business operators. In a speech that drew repeated applause, he promised practical reforms to boost grassroots enterprise, including a proposal to extend market operating hours beyond the current 7 p.m. closing time.

“I have listened to you, and I understand your challenges,” Orego said. “One of my top priorities is to work with city authorities to extend market operating hours. Vendors should not be forced to close when customers are still ready to buy.”

The proposal struck a chord with the business community, with many market vendors cheering and voicing their support. Several noted that such a change would significantly improve their daily earnings and stimulate Soroti’s evening economy.

In addition to his market-focused proposals, Orego announced plans to inject capital into local savings and credit cooperatives (SACCOs), offering low-interest loans at just one percent.

“This initiative is about empowering communities to save and borrow responsibly,” Orego explained. “It’s not just about access to capital, but about building a culture of financial discipline and long-term growth.”

Orego’s message of inclusive economic empowerment, community-first governance, and hands-on leadership has helped distinguish his campaign in a competitive field. His grassroots mobilization and clear policy priorities have made him a formidable contender in the upcoming primaries scheduled for July 17.

“As your representative, I will be a hands-on leader who listens and delivers,” Orego told supporters. “It’s time to elect leaders who understand local realities and are truly committed to transformative leadership.”

With the NRM primaries in Soroti City East Division shaping up to be closely contested, Orego’s campaign has taken center stage. His combination of public engagement, practical proposals, and visible support suggests a strong showing at the polls—and perhaps a shift in the political landscape of Soroti City.
