TESO — The Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) has appealed for constructive dialogue, fairness, and strict adherence to the rule of law in the ongoing matter involving former Speaker of Parliament and Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among.
In a press release issued on June 29, the cultural institution said a delegation of Iteso elders and leaders, led by His Royal Highness Papa Emorimor III, Paul Sande Emolot Etomeileng, visited Among at her residence on Sunday, June 28, to express solidarity and assess her well-being amid developments that have drawn significant public attention.
According to the statement, the delegation found Among in stable condition and encouraged by what it described as her resilience despite the challenges she is currently facing.
"The visit was undertaken in light of the ongoing developments surrounding her, which have attracted significant public attention," the statement reads. The ICU added that it appreciated the security agencies for facilitating the visit after previous requests to meet her had not been granted.
During the meeting, the cultural leaders conveyed messages of encouragement and solidarity on behalf of the Ateker people, reaffirming their support for one of their own during what they described as a difficult period.
The union also expressed appreciation to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his continued leadership and protection of Ugandans. It further commended security agencies and relevant government institutions for the professionalism they have demonstrated in handling the matter.
As part of its appeal, the ICU called for an opportunity for constructive dialogue between the concerned parties and the President. It also urged authorities to give special consideration to Among's health and well-being as ongoing legal and administrative processes continue.
The statement further appealed for the expedited completion of investigations to ensure a timely and conclusive resolution of the matter. It emphasized the need for transparency, fairness, and strict observance of the principles of justice and the rule of law throughout the process.
Additionally, the cultural institution requested that, where circumstances permit and in accordance with the law, consideration be given to measures that would allow Among greater freedom and dignity while awaiting the conclusion of the ongoing proceedings.
The ICU also called upon members of the public, particularly the Ateker community in Uganda and the diaspora, to remain calm, peaceful, and patient as lawful institutions continue to discharge their responsibilities.
Reaffirming its longstanding relationship with the Government of Uganda, the Iteso Cultural Union expressed optimism that the matter would be resolved amicably, fairly, and in a manner that strengthens national unity and public confidence in the country's institutions.
The statement concluded with a prayer for peace and wise leadership, saying, "May God bless Uganda and guide all leaders entrusted with the responsibility of serving our nation."
