NRM delegates in Serere District have thrown their support behind David Calvin Echodu, a contestant for the position of NRM Vice Chairman Eastern Region, after he delivered a fiery speech calling for an end to what he termed the party’s “old political playbook.”
Echodu, who was wrapping up his Teso sub-region mobilization tour ahead of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) conference, told delegates it was time to move away from repetitive historical narratives and focus on delivering tangible services to the people.
“I have not come here to talk about history or waste time. Will children eat history? If you want history, go to school and teach it. The people are crying for better services like health, and the youth want solutions for today, not the past,” Echodu said.
He argued that leaders who rely solely on history to appeal to voters should be held accountable for their performance after their terms in office, rather than “playing with the minds” of citizens. According to Echodu, the NRM must embrace leaders who can produce results and support the president’s agenda of change.
Echodu also criticized the practice of bringing people from Kampala to mobilize support for the president, saying delegates and local party structures are more than capable if adequately facilitated. “The structures are here. Empower them, and they will deliver,” he added.
The meeting saw delegates chant Echodu’s name and pledge to back his bid for vice chairmanship, describing him as the “fresh energy” the party needs. Many accused the incumbent, Capt. Mike Mukula, of failing to unite party members and instead fueling internal divisions.
Delegates also called for increased support for their SACCOs and appointments for long-serving party cadres who, they say, have been sidelined despite their years of sacrifice for the party and the president.
Echodu’s remarks appeared to be a direct response to Mukula’s recent mobilization speeches, which heavily featured historical references while questioning Echodu’s experience for the role.
The Serere rally marked the conclusion of Echodu’s tour of the Teso sub-region, setting the stage for what is expected to be a closely contested race in the upcoming CEC elections.
