The political temperature in Serere District is rising sharply as Independent candidate Esther Lucy Acom challenges incumbent Minister Hellen Adoa in a high stakes contest for Woman Member of Parliament.

What was expected to be a routine re-election campaign for Minister Adoa has evolved into a heated political battle, following Acom’s decision to run as an independent after the National Resistance Movement (NRM) tribunal declared Adoa the official party flagbearer.

While the tribunal’s endorsement reaffirmed Adoa’s standing within the ruling party, it failed to unify the party base. Instead, it sparked a surge in support for Acom, whose campaign has taken on a life of its own. Known by her moniker "Ajokotau," Acom expressed disappointment in the tribunal’s decision, describing it as unjust but unsurprising.

Despite the ruling, she has remained steadfast in her determination to represent the people of Serere, stating that her campaign will move forward with renewed purpose.

Acom's message has found fertile ground among voters who feel left behind by the current administration. Her platform prioritizes improved access to education, quality healthcare, and economic empowerment for women and youth, issues that resonate strongly with a population eager for change.

While responding to  tribunal's decision, Acom called for calm and resilience. “Though justice wasn't served, the story of the people of Serere is important. Let's ensure your voices are heard louder in the 2026 elections,” she declared, underscoring her intent to defy the party’s verdict and push forward with her campaign. In a symbolic move, she chose the chair as her campaign emblem, stating, “The flag has been taken but the seat is mine,” a defiant assertion of her continued pursuit of the parliamentary position.

The contest has grown beyond a mere competition between two candidates. It has become a litmus test for party loyalty versus personal credibility, and for national influence versus local connection. As both camps ramp up their outreach efforts, the people of Serere are watching closely, more engaged than ever. The outcome of this race could mark a significant turning point in the district’s political narrative.

With the 2026 elections on the horizon, Serere stands at a crossroads, one that may well redefine its political representation and developmental priorities for years to come.
