SOROTI – The State House Health Monitoring Unit (SHHMU) has launched a comprehensive on-the-spot monitoring exercise at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, following multiple complaints regarding the quality of healthcare services at the facility.

The SHHMU aims to collaborate closely with the hospital’s management as well as city and district leadership to assess current challenges, identify service delivery gaps, and develop actionable solutions to improve healthcare for residents of the Teso sub-region and beyond.

Upon arrival, the SHHMU team, led by Deputy Director Dr. Julian Nabatanzi, held an initial briefing with local authorities. The meeting was chaired by the Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Mr. Okurut John Michael, and attended by Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Hajji Muluga Imran, alongside other key officials including the Deputy Town Clerk, the Mayor of Soroti West Division, City and District Health Officers, and heads of security. This meeting ensured full involvement and awareness among all stakeholders regarding the monitoring exercise.

Following the briefing, the team proceeded to the hospital for an entry meeting with the hospital administration and departmental heads, chaired by Hospital Director Dr. Watmon Benedicto. The session was followed by a preliminary tour of the facility and the commencement of preparing an aide-mémoire.

A major focus in the coming days will be the development of a collaborative aide-mémoire, a tool designed to systematically document the following by each department head:

  • Identified gaps and bottlenecks in service delivery

  • Proposed interventions to address these gaps

  • Agreed-upon actions and practical, sustainable solutions

  • Required resources and budget considerations

  • Timelines and responsible officers to ensure accountability

The State House Health Monitoring Unit stresses that this supervision exercise is intended to be constructive and solution-driven, with the ultimate goal of strengthening healthcare governance. The effort seeks to enhance the hospital’s efficiency and effectiveness in delivering high-quality services to the community.
