Members of the Teso Parliamentary Group on Thursday held a tense meeting with the Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Markson Oboth, over growing concerns regarding the arrest and alleged incommunicado detention of Amuria District Woman Member of Parliament, Etilu Magret.

The closed-door engagement at Parliament was convened following reports that Hon. Etilu had been taken into custody by security agencies under circumstances that had not been officially clarified.

During the meeting, legislators from the Teso region pressed the Speaker for urgent answers on the MP’s whereabouts, condition, and the legal basis for her continued detention.

Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that MPs expressed frustration over the lack of official communication from security agencies, warning that the situation risked escalating political tensions within Parliament.

Speaker Oboth reportedly informed the legislators that he had already initiated contact with relevant security institutions to establish the facts surrounding the arrest and secure updates on the detained lawmaker.

He assured the group that Parliament was actively following up the matter and emphasized the institution’s commitment to ensuring that due process is observed and the rights of the legislator are protected.

The meeting agreed to form a small delegation to directly engage security agencies in a bid to obtain access to Hon. Etilu and verify her condition.

The team includes the MP’s husband and Ediau (Mp Amuria County), with coordination support from the Office of the Speaker to facilitate official communication with security authorities.

According to a statement shared by Kapelebyong County MP Francis Akorikin on his WhatsApp status, members of the Teso Parliamentary Group voiced strong concern over what they described as an opaque handling of the arrest.

Lawmakers urged security agencies to provide immediate clarification, warning that prolonged silence could deepen public anxiety and mistrust.

By press time, security agencies had not issued any official statement confirming the reasons for the arrest or addressing reports of the MP’s alleged detention.

Parliament is expected to continue monitoring the situation closely as pressure mounts for transparency and accountability in the handling of the case.
