Isaac Orego, an aspirant for the Soroti City East Parliamentary seat and flagbearer for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, has successfully led a major clean-up initiative at Moruapesur Market, addressing a persistent sanitation issue that has plagued the area for over a decade. The market, known for its long-standing rubbish build-up, has been a source of distress for local vendors and residents, with concerns over foul odors, blocked pathways, and the health risks associated with the accumulation of waste.
In partnership with the Soroti City Council and the Alight to the nations church, Orego rallied community members and churchgoers from the Nations Church to join him in the clean-up effort. The event, which brought together local authorities and residents, aimed not only to remove the accumulated waste but also to restore the market to a more hygienic and functional state.
During the clean-up, Orego stressed the importance of ensuring that citizens live in clean and safe environments, a responsibility he believes all leaders should prioritize. “A good leader should ensure their people stay in a clean place, as this demonstrates effective leadership and commitment to the community,” Orego said. He emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader effort to improve sanitation across Soroti City East, which will extend to other parts of the constituency in the coming months.
The market’s severe sanitation issues have led to frequent health concerns, with diseases such as cholera and malaria often being linked to improper waste disposal. Local vendors, who have struggled with the problem for years, were grateful for the intervention. Some reported that the filth had not only caused unpleasant smells but also created an environment conducive to pests, including snakes. “This rubbish has been a problem for over ten years. We are very grateful to Isaac Orego for addressing this issue, as it’s been a long time coming,” one vendor said.
Orego also made a call to the Soroti City Council, requesting the installation of more dustbins around the market to encourage proper waste disposal. “We need to provide accessible waste disposal points to ensure that everyone has a place to put their rubbish. This will help prevent waste from piling up in public spaces and improve the overall cleanliness of the area,” he stated.
As the clean up effort continues, Orego's team hopes that the success of this initiative will inspire other leaders to take similar actions in their communities, working together to create cleaner, healthier environments for all. With this initiative, Isaac Orego has demonstrated his commitment to addressing the pressing issues facing Soroti City East, positioning himself as a leader focused on the well-being of his constituents.
