The Ateker community, particularly the Iteso people, has immense cause for celebration and pride as renowned Ugandan artist and cultural fusion innovator, Daniel Okiror, prepares for a major performance at Hyde Park Soroti this Friday, October 31st.

Okiror, who has spent years traversing the globe using music to showcase the rich uniqueness of Ateker heritage, is scheduled to perform live with his band as part of the highly anticipated African Safari tour.

Okiror, also affectionately known by his artistic moniker "Eleja," has firmly established himself as a powerful cultural ambassador. His work successfully fuses traditional Ugandan sounds with contemporary global genres, creating a distinctive musical signature that has captivated international audiences from South Korea to the Netherlands.

Born in Uganda, Okiror’s journey from the poverty-stricken village of Acanipi and the Nakatunya slums to the world stage is an inspiring narrative of dedication. Despite challenging beginnings, he honed his craft by studying lingala music and mastering handmade instruments, eventually channeling his passion into formal education at the Africa Institute of Music.

Okiror’s sound is a sophisticated tapestry woven from folk elements such as ajosi, eleja, and ekembe, seamlessly blended with Afrobeat, pop, rhumba, and Afro-jazz. He is particularly credited with crafting the amagar’eleja sound, inspired by the Luo people in Kenya.

When performing, Okiror and his band utilize traditional instruments like the akogo (thumb piano), adeudeu, and amagar’eleja, integrating them with acoustic guitar, drums, jembe, and saxophone, demonstrating how ancient traditions can thrive within modern musical contexts.

His performance history is extensive, spanning major venues across the globe, including countries such as Israel, the US, Germany, France, and numerous African nations. He has released three successful albums: ‘One Lover’ (2009), ‘Light in Africa’ (2011), and ‘Emuria Koliai’ (2014).

Beyond his artistic accomplishments, Okiror is a multilingual cultural promoter, social entrepreneur, and dedicated philanthropist. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from Makerere University and a Master’s in Project Planning and Management from the University of Nairobi, underscoring his commitment to strategic development and social change. He also owns the influential record label, Akogo Africa.

His philanthropic reach operates primarily through the Daniel Okiror Intercultural Foundation, also known as Beats of Hope. The foundation is dedicated to providing aid to street children, facilitating intercultural exchange, and running artist residency programs across Uganda, Kenya, and the Netherlands.

Key initiatives spearheaded by the foundation include:

  • The Wana wa mola street boy's home in Mombasa, Kenya.
  • The Akogo house artists’ hostel in Mombasa, Kenya.
  • The Africa Safari Festival and SameDrumBeat Festival in the Netherlands, promoting cultural exposure.
  • The upcoming Beats of Hope Centre and Modal village in Uganda.

As Okiror takes the stage in Soroti city this Friday, he represents not only exceptional musical talent but also the enduring spirit and philanthropic ambition of the Ateker people, solidifying his status as one of Uganda's most influential global figures in culture and humanitarian action.
