During a charged political rally in Soroti City West yesterday, Gen. Peter Elwelu, former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, made headlines by labeling political opposition to the government as “evil.” His remarks, which drew on biblical themes, were made in support of National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer David Calvin Echodu, who is contesting for the parliamentary seat against incumbent Jonathan Ebwalu of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

Speaking to a large gathering in Orwadai ward, Gen. Elwelu claimed that the notion of opposition was not new but had existed “from the beginning of creation,” asserting that any force resisting established leadership operates against a divine mandate. “Opposition started from heaven,” he stated emphatically. “When God threw the devil down, that was the first opposition. So any opposition fighting government is evil and must be rejected.”

The general's comments elicited a mixed response from the audience, with enthusiastic cheers from supporters contrasting with visible discomfort among others.

Gen. Elwelu went on to urge the residents to rally around Echodu, emphasizing his qualities as a dedicated young leader capable of promoting development in Soroti City West. “You have a son who respects authority, who respects this country, and who will work with government to bring services closer to you,” he declared, positioning Echodu as a source of progress in contrast to the chaos he associated with political opposition.

Echodu also took the opportunity to address his supporters, advocating for unity and a politics focused on development. He promised to enhance infrastructure, create better opportunities for youth, and strengthen community services if elected.

The rally, which underscored the NRM's commitment to the Soroti City West constituency, attracted significant attention and a strong turnout. NRM mobilisers noted that Gen. Elwelu’s high-profile presence signals the seriousness of the party’s strategy to reclaim influence in a region that has long leaned toward the FDC.

As political activity ramps up in Soroti City West ahead of the 2026 elections, both the NRM and FDC are competing fiercely to solidify their support among voters. Analysts suggest that the NRM’s approach, including the involvement of prominent figures like Gen. Elwelu, represents a calculated effort to expand its reach in opposition strongholds.

With the election date approaching, residents are likely to see increased political engagements, including door-to-door campaigns and community meetings, as both parties strive to connect with voters and secure their support ahead of a highly anticipated election.
