Peter Edopu Edeku, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearer for Dakabela County, has officially launched his campaign with a strong focus on transforming housing standards across the constituency. Speaking to residents at a public rally held in Merok Village, Merok Parish, Katine Subcounty, Edeku outlined a five-year plan aimed at moving households from grass-thatched huts to permanent, iron-roofed homes.

Addressing a large gathering of supporters, Edeku said decent housing remains one of the major challenges affecting families in Dakabela County. He noted that many communities have already taken initiative, particularly women’s groups that have been mobilizing savings to purchase iron sheets. According to Edeku, more than seven women’s groups have approached the Edeku Foundation seeking support to supplement their efforts.

He explained that during consultations, he encouraged the women to safeguard their savings during the campaign period, assuring them that after the elections, the foundation would work with them to top up their contributions and procure iron sheets. Edeku said the initiative will be expanded across villages, noting that while some communities have eight women saving together, others have over one hundred participants ready to benefit from the program.

Edeku emphasized that the housing initiative is part of a broader development strategy to uplift living standards and promote dignity among rural households. He said the idea was inspired by President Yoweri Museveni’s book From Grass to Permanent Houses, which documents successful housing transformation programs implemented in regions such as Ankole. “What has worked elsewhere can work in Dakabela,” Edeku said, adding that strong community participation will be key to achieving the goal.

Moses Emugu Eroju, the head of the Edeku campaign task force and LC3 Chairperson of Katine Subcounty, praised Edeku’s long-standing engagement with the community. He described the NRM flag bearer as a leader who has consistently worked closely with the people and understands their daily challenges.

As the general election approaches, Edeku’s campaign message centered on housing, community empowerment, and practical development solutions is gaining attention among voters in Dakabela County, positioning him as a candidate focused on long-term transformation rather than short-term promises.
