Residents of Kateta Sub-county in Serere District have rallied behind Esther Lucy Acom Ajokotau, an independent candidate for the Serere District Woman Member of Parliament seat, citing persistent development challenges and the need for responsive leadership.
The support has emerged from several villages, including Nanaga A, Akoroi A, Akoroi B and Kayangan, where community members say inadequate service delivery and limited government engagement have slowed socio-economic progress over the years.
Local leaders expressed concern that the area has experienced prolonged neglect, particularly in critical sectors such as education, infrastructure and livelihoods. They argue that the forthcoming elections present an opportunity for residents to choose leaders who can effectively articulate and advocate for their priorities at the national level.
Emesu Richard, the Local Council I chairperson for Nanaga A village, said the community has endured more than a decade of underdevelopment. He noted that residents are now determined to support leadership they believe will address long-standing issues.
“Our people want change. We need leadership that understands our challenges and is committed to finding lasting solutions,” Richard said, adding that many residents see Acom as a credible alternative capable of driving development in the district.
Richard Emanio, a head of Acom’s campaign task force, said his decision to support her followed a reassessment of the district’s political direction. He explained that after previously backing the incumbent leadership, he became disillusioned by what he described as a lack of clear focus on transforming Serere District.
“Acom has demonstrated a strong vision for development and inclusivity. That is why many of us have chosen to mobilize support for her,” Emanio said.
Residents also pointed to Acom’s proposed development agenda as a major factor influencing their endorsement. Tino Martha, a resident of Kanyangan village, said the community is hopeful that her plans will address key concerns affecting education standards, household incomes and social welfare.
Addressing supporters during a community engagement, Esther Lucy Acom Ajokotau pledged to champion inclusive leadership that prioritizes the needs of all communities in Serere District. She outlined her commitment to lobbying for improved school infrastructure, promoting women’s economic empowerment and supporting youth-focused initiatives aimed at enhancing skills and employment opportunities.
“A leader must represent everyone fairly and work to ensure that development reaches all corners of the district,” Acom said, emphasizing that her agenda is centered on equity, accountability and meaningful representation.
As campaigns continue ahead of the elections, political observers note that growing grassroots support in areas such as Kateta Sub-county could significantly influence the dynamics of the Serere District Woman MP race.
