Daniel Eigu, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) flag bearer for the Soroti County parliamentary seat in the 2026 General Elections, has officially withdrawn from the race and announced his decision to quit the opposition party, pledging support for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and candidates of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Eigu, who has also been serving as Chairperson of FDC Soroti District since 2020, made the announcement following consultations that included a meeting with President Museveni, who is also the National Chairman of the NRM.

In a public statement issued in Soroti, Eigu said his decision was the result of deep personal reflection and a desire to prioritize unity, development, and the broader interests of the people of Soroti County, the Teso sub-region, and Uganda at large.

He said that after careful consideration of the best interests of the electorate and the people of Soroti County and Teso at large, he decided to withdraw from the parliamentary race, adding that the move would foster unity and collaboration for the benefit of the people.

Eigu, who was contesting for the Soroti County Member of Parliament seat ahead of the January 15, 2026 elections, said that stepping aside would allow him to better serve the community by working with the ruling party to address urgent development needs.

He noted that serving the people of Soroti District has always been his priority and that by stepping aside, he believes he can better contribute to addressing the community’s urgent needs through collaboration with the National Resistance Movement.

Eigu added that throughout the campaign period, he dedicated time to listening to the voices of the electorate and upholding the values of democracy and inclusion, emphasizing that his commitment to public service remains firm despite the political shift.

Eigu’s withdrawal has been formally communicated to the Electoral Commission of Uganda through a letter dated 22nd December 2025, addressed to the Commission Chairperson, Hon. Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi.

In the letter, Eigu officially notified the Electoral Commission of his decision to withdraw from candidature for the position of Member of Parliament for Soroti County Constituency in the forthcoming 2026 General Elections. He requested that the Commission amend its records and remove his name from the list of duly nominated candidates with immediate effect.

He stated that although he was duly nominated on 22nd October 2025, he had voluntarily elected to withdraw from the election, noting that the decision was made freely and with full knowledge of its legal implications. He also confirmed that he had formally notified his political party, the Forum for Democratic Change, of his withdrawal.

On the same date, Eigu also wrote to the Secretary General of the Forum for Democratic Change, formally informing the party of his decision to withdraw from the Soroti County parliamentary race.

In the correspondence, he stated that the decision was made conscientiously and with full appreciation of its legal and political implications, adding that he had already notified the Electoral Commission and requested that its records be amended accordingly.

Eigu thanked his supporters, campaign task force, and the wider Soroti community for their encouragement throughout the campaign period. He said that moving forward, he would focus his efforts on advocating for unity, development, and collaboration across the political divide.

He expressed optimism about working with the National Resistance Movement to promote initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of the people of Soroti County and the wider Teso sub-region
