Former Commissioner in the Ministry of Water and Environment, Engineer Joseph Oriono Eyatu, has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that he was arrested over election-related violence in Serere District, describing the claims as false, misleading and driven by desperation.
In a clarification issued on Saturday, Engineer Eyatu said he was surprised to learn that some individuals were spreading information suggesting he had been arrested. He emphasized that he is a free man and actively engaged in political mobilization, noting that he has no time to waste on what he termed “idle talk meant to confuse voters.”
“I wish to clearly state that I have not been arrested. I am free and currently busy with campaigns. Those spreading such claims are only trying to distract the people of Serere,” Eyatu said.
He called upon residents of Serere to remain calm and focused as the electoral process continues, urging them to turn up in large numbers and vote peacefully. Eyatu reiterated his support for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and independent candidate Esther Lucy Acom Ajokotau for the Serere Woman Member of Parliament seat, assuring voters that their votes are safe.
Engineer Eyatu further confirmed that he is actively campaigning for Acom Ajokotau across the district, including Bugondo Sub-county, where he has been seen mobilizing supporters. He said his presence on the ground is intended to counter misinformation and demonstrate that he remains fully involved in the campaigns.
Acom Ajokotau is seeking to unseat the State Minister for Fisheries, Hellen Adoa, in what has become a closely watched contest in the district. Eyatu expressed confidence in Acom’s candidacy, saying she represents the aspirations of the people of Serere.
He appealed to voters to reject violence, misinformation and intimidation, and instead embrace peaceful participation in the democratic process. “Serere should go and vote in peace,” he said, adding that unity and calm are essential for credible elections and development in the area.
