The Kanyanya - Kawempe Chief Magistrates court has remanded two National Unity Platform (NUP) members, Akiso Benjamin and Ismail Mayanja, over allegations of inciting people to commit offences.

The duo appeared in court on Tuesday and were charged with incitement to commit offence contrary to section 21(2) of the Penal Code Act.

According to the prosecution, Akiso and Mayanja, along with others still at large, published banners and flags with words that incite the public to riot or engage in unlawful assembly on February 2, 2026, at Wandegeya Centre in Kampala district. The banners allegedly carried phrases such as "Museveni must go", "free political prisoners", and "demand our victory".

The court remanded the two NUP members until February 17, 2026, when the case will come up for further hearing and bail application. However, the National Unity Platform has come out to criticise the charges and remand, with Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya taking to social media to express his discontent.

"Our Head of Institutions, comrade @AkisoBenjamin and comrade Mayanja Ismail have been remanded by the court in Kanyanya. Their crime? Demonstrating peacefully against injustice and impunity!" Rubongoya posted on his X account.
