The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Soroti has sentenced Geoffrey Omedel to 18 months in prison for stealing electronic gadgets belonging to Vision Group journalist Godfrey Ojore.
Omedel was found guilty of breaking into Ojore’s home in Pamba on July 30, 2024, and making away with a laptop, camera, mobile phones, and personal identification documents. The prosecution told court that the accused unlawfully accessed the residence and stole the items without consent.
Chief Magistrate Hilda Bakanansa Walaga ruled that the evidence presented by the state sufficiently linked Omedel to the crime and proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt. She subsequently handed down an 18-month custodial sentence.
However, co-accused John Ekwamu was acquitted after the court found no substantial evidence implicating him in the burglary.
State prosecutor Doreen Adero had asked the court to impose a five-year jail term and order compensation for the complainant. While the court upheld the conviction and sentence, it declined to grant compensation.
Ojore was not present in court at the time of sentencing.
